Mama’s Challah

Mama’s challah. Or as my mom calls it: “the BEST challah.” And she’s right. The recipe from start to finish takes time (approximately 3 hours) so I either make it Thursday night or Friday afternoon when I get home. I prefer making it Friday so it’s fresh and warm out of oven; Here’s the [...]

Rugelach

Cooking is a surprisingly great distraction when you’re fasting. I don’t usually fast, trust me, but on Yom Kippur (Sept. 27-28, ‘09) it’s part of the holiday. When I need to taste something, I just ask James to be my taster for more salt or pepper or any other ingredient.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY DAD!!!
As you can see, we had quite a display of desserts for Passover. The flourless chocolate torte (at the top) was rich and dense so we had some leftover. But the strawberry macaroon tart was pretty much gone by the end of the night.
Other desserts on the table starting at top left [...]

I have to admit I was skeptical about this recipe as I put it together. I had never used matzo meal (flour that’s kosher for Passover) before in baking, but since it’s Passover I didn’t have much of a choice.
So I had one this morning. Then I had two. Then I had to tell [...]

First let’s talk about Purim (which took place March 10, ‘09). The history: A holiday not in the Torah, but from the Book of Esther. The story is in and read from the Megillah. Esther married the King of Persia (without him knowing she was Jewish). The king’s aide, Haman, wanted to kill the [...]
